2007-2008 Community Outreach Series: Peaceful Mind/Peaceful World
February 27 at 4 p.m.: Jane Goodall.
World-renowned scientist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Jane Goodall, Ph.D, D.B.E., will speak at FAU on Wednesday, February 27 at 4 p.m. in the University Arena on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
Goodall will address current work at the Gombe Stream Research Center in Tanzania, where research into the chimpanzee has been ongoing since 1960. She also will discuss her global youth program Roots & Shoots, and the Jane Goodall Institute programs that have evolved to conserve precious forest habitat and improve the lives of people living adjacent to Gombe National Park and in other parts of Africa. As a United Nations Messenger of Peace, Goodall will also address her reasons for hope in these complex times and ways in which every individual can make a difference every day.
Following the lecture, Goodall will sign books for anyone interested in staying.  Goodall’s books and information about the projects of the Jane Goodall Institute will be available, but audience members are also welcome to bring their own books for signing. Â
Admission is $15 for community members. Tickets can be purchased at Arena box office on the day of the event or in advance by calling 1-800-564-9539 or through www.fauevents.com .  They can also purchased at the Box Office in the Student Union on the Boca Raton campus Monday-Friday, 10-5.  Â
Admission is free to FAU students, faculty and staff with ID. March 8 from 10am - 2 pm: Inner Peace, outer peace: learn methods for calming the mind and lifting the spirit. Bring "a reason for hope" into everyday life. Workshop led by Jill Bormann, PhD/RN, Veterans Affairs San Diego/San Diego State University. Registration fee ($10) includes lunch and a copy of E. Easwaran's book The Compassionate University: The Power of Individuals to Heal the Environment. Space is limited; pre-registration is advised. Â
March 29. from 9:30am - noon: Creating Peace and Compassion. Explore the changes in everyday life that are possible when we learn practical ways to strengthen our abilities to be calm, focused and compassionate. Space is limited; pre-registration is advised. Free to participants in the March 8 workshop and builds on that workshop. Registration free ($5) includes a copy of E. Easwaran's The Compassionate Universe. Â
