Melanie Loehwing's research and teaching concerns the relationships between rhetoric, democracy, and citizenship. Her work primarily focuses on the rhetorical constructions of "home" and "homelessness," the politics of visuality as a means of constituting and contesting citizen bodies and civic subjectivities, and the role of rhetoric in contemporary U.S. democratic culture. Her research has been published in Philosophy & Rhetoric and the Quarterly Journal of Speech. She is currently working on a manuscript investigating the political implications of competing optics assumed by mainstream and minority homeless advocacy organizations.
