  • Attend meeting (tbd time and date). Student Involvement & Leadership (SIL) will provide lunch.
  • Provide SIL with a brief bio that we will use on our website to describe Faculty OWL Leaders

Student Leadership Conference

The annual Student Leadership Conference is a one-day experience designed to help broaden students’ leadership perspectives and knowledge of skills needed to be successful. The conference is open to all students and includes a keynote speaker, several breakout sections, and many wonderful opportunities for students to interact with each other and FAU faculty and staff. The conference is based on The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Responsibilities:

  • Attend the Student Leadership Conference on Saturday, September 22, 2012, 9 am – 3 pm
  • Facilitate a 45-minute breakout session (twice) for students based on The Leadership Challenge. SIL will provide The Leadership Challenge to faculty. The first two chapters give a great overview of the concepts in the book
  • Provide the title and a description of your breakout session to SIL by September 1, 2012, as well as any room set up or AV needs

Leadership Reading Circle

The Leadership Reading Circle Program engages students and faculty in discussions about leadership based on a specific book. Each semester a different book is selected and a faculty member leads a discussion based on the key points from the book with 15 -18 students. The discussion topics are mainly driven by the direction of conversation throughout the workshop and students learn through sharing and from the experiences of fellow students. Past books used in the Leadership Reading Circle have included Soul of a Citizen by Paul Rogat Loeb, The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Oz Principle by Connors, Smith & Hickman, Dreams of My Father by Barack Obama, and The Starfish and the Spider by Ori Brafman. Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate 1 Reading Circle in the fall OR spring semester and determine schedule of meetings (meets for 60 minutes, every other week, for 5 sessions –  first session should be around the fourth week of classes to give SIL time to promote program to students). Schedule should be determined by August 1, 2012.
  • Choose a leadership book for the Reading Circle by August 1, 2012. SIL will purchase books
  • Keep attendance list at each Reading Circle session. Students who successfully complete the 5 sessions will receive a $50 book voucher for the campus bookstore provided by SIL

Student Leadership Institute

The Student Leadership Institute is designed to serve as a high impact one-day leadership experience for students in the fall and spring semester. Leadership Institutes happen  once a month and involve 30-50 students per Institute (8 Institutes throughout the year). Faculty are involved by presenting on a leadership-related topic for two of the Leadership Institutes throughout the year (1 in the fall semester and 1 in the spring semester). Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a 60-minute breakout session for students based on The Leadership Challenge at two different Student Leadership Institutes (1 session in the fall semester and 1 session in the spring semester)
