2012 Donald A. Gatzke Dissertation Award

The School of Public Administration is proud to announce that Kristi D. Caravella has received the 2012 Donald A. Gatzke Dissertation Award by the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA) for her work, "Mimetic, Coercive, and Normative Influences in Institutionalization of Organizational Practices: The Case of Distance Learning in Higher Education"  (Florida Atlantic University, 2011).   AAUA annually makes awards to recent doctoral dissertations related to management or administration in higher education.  The awards committee was impressed by the comparative qualitative case study methodology used to explore the development of distance learning in US higher education.  The DiMaggio and Powell model was an ideal explanatory theory on which to base the study because that model gives full recognition to an array of internal, external, and professionalizing forces that determine the organization's structural reaction to an initiative.  This work is a contribution to the study of distance education in particular and of institutional change in general.  As such it is valuable scholarship and valuable reading for active administrators.
