Information for Recently Accepted MSW Students

Congratulations on your being accepted into the MSW program. The FAU School of Social Work Professors, Instructors and support staff look forward to meeting you at our orientations and classes. If you have any immediate questions about the program, feel free to contact Dr. Hamlin or your academic advisor. We will be able to answer many of your questions at our orientations. In the meantime, here is some information to help you prepare for your first term:

  1. All incoming MSW students must attend an MSW Student Orientation prior to beginning the program (in late August). This orientation is separate from the general university orientation and is always held the Thursday before classes start, in the late afternoon or evening. Students will be notified of the exact time and location when they are accepted.
  2. All full-time incoming students must apply for Field Education online within two weeks of being accepted into the MSW program.  They must also attend a mandatory field orientation on campus by July 1 prior to being referred to an agency for field placement. Information regarding the online application process and the dates and times of the mandatory orientations will be provided to students when they are accepted into the program or they can contact the School of Social Work at 561-297-3234. Due to the limited amount of agencies that can provide evening and weekend hours for internships, the School of Social Work can not guarantee that an appropriate internship can be found unless students can devote weekday-daytime hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to their internships.
  3. The MSW program is a rigorous program, so please consider ways to manage or reduce your other life obligations (work, family, etc.) to give you enough time and energy for classes, field education, reading, writing, and research.
  4. Make sure that we have your most recent email address and contact information so that you do not miss any important messages. Once you have applied to the university, FAU will create an FAU email address for you. You can go on to the FAU website at http://myfau.fau.edu/cp/home/loginf to retrieve this email or forward your email to the email address that you regularly use (which is what most students do).
