Students Crisis Awareness Committee's Role in Assisting Students

A powerful support of campus safety and community is FAU’s Student Crisis Awareness Committee (SCAC).  The SCAC is comprised of University staff and faculty who have frequent student contact and who can be a resource of information on students in distress and/or at risk. Committee members may include representatives from Athletics, Campus Recreation, Greek Life, Dean of Students Office, Housing & Residential Life, Student Activities, Student Conduct, Ombudsman, Police Department, the partner campuses, University Faculty, Health Services (consulting role), Counseling Center (consulting role), and the Office of Students with Disabilities (consulting role).   SCAC meets once every two weeks and as needed to gather information. This information is used to advise University administrators on how to handle students identified as having difficulties coping or potentially posing a risk of harm to themselves and/or others.

The Student Crisis Awareness Committee’s primary focus will be on students who are not yet at a crisis stage, but who pose a risk for crisis or demonstrate at risk behavior.  The Student Crisis Awareness Committee’s primary function will be to confer and decide on immediate action(s) to be taken to prevent risk to the student and/or the University community.
