Learning Communities
What is a Learning Community?
Learning Communities (LCs) are interdisciplinary clusters of courses that explore a particular theme or shared academic interest. Teachers work together to create a dynamic learning environment for their students. Typically, your readings, discussions, and assignments will overlap from one course to the next. You will also get to know your classmates quite well, since enrollment is limited to students taking all courses in the cluster.
What are the advantages of LC courses?
LC courses emphasize the relevance of your studies to the "big picture." You will see connections between different courses, and how they relate to important topics in your life. You will also have a unique opportunity to become a member of a supportive learning environment. Students in LCs typically have an easier time developing study groups and other peer support systems.
Who can register for LC courses?
You must meet the
prerequisites for all the courses in the LC cluster you choose.
OK, sign me up! What do I do next?
Learning Communities are offered on the Clarkston, Decatur, and Dunwoody campuses. To sign up for a Learning Community, all you have to do is register for all the courses in a specific cluster (see schedule below).
Enter all CRNs at the same time and save your registration. If there are Learning Support courses, those must be entered first, before college-level classes such as HEDS. You can also receive registration assistance through Advising and Counseling Services or the Humanities office on your campus.
