Emergency Medical Technician
Applied Technical Diploma (EMT-ATD)

AREA OF CONCENTRATION: Upon completion of the program, all graduates will have demonstrated the necessary knowledge, technical skill, and professional attitude and behavior to implement safe, effective and appropriate care in their roles as entry level Emergency Medical Technician‐Basic (EMT‐B) or Paramedic.

INTRODUCTION: The Emergency Medical Services programs are accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP) and by the Florida Department of Health. Graduates of either the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic programs are eligible to apply for the state examination and/or the national board examination.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT):

This is the beginning level in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) career ladder.  EMTs are trained in basic life support measures including patient assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillation (AED), oxygen therapy, shock prevention, bandaging, splinting, spinal immobilization, and vehicle extrication. The EMT program can be completed in one semester. Application deadlines are March 1st  for the Summer semester, June 1st  for the Fall semester, and November 1st  for the Spring semester.

ADMISSIONS:

Application process for EMT Program and Paramedic Program:

1. New students should apply for General Admission to Gulf Coast State College <click here>
2. New students must pay $20 college application fee online, at the Bookstore, or at the Business Office
3. Submit official high school transcripts or GED with scores to the Office of Admissions and Records
4. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended for evaluation by the Office of Admissions and Records
5. Students must be eighteen years of age or older
6. Submit completed EMT Program application to the Health Sciences Division  <click here>
7. Take the Florida entry level tests: Postsecondaryy Education Readiness Tests (PERT). Minimum scores are listed in the application packet.  Students may contact the Testing Office for dates, times, and locations of placement test.
8. Submit signed Narcotic/Mental Statement found in application packet
9. Submit a copy of your current valid Florida driver’s license

Requirements for EMT after Conditional Acceptance:

1. Satisfactory fingerprint / criminal background check done at GCSC at the student's expense
2. Copy of current valid CPR card and maintain certification throughout the program.  Acceptable cards are the American Heart Assoc. Healthcare Provider, American Red Cross Professional Rescuer, or American Safety and Health Institute CPR-Pro.
3. Submit completed physical exam with satisfactory results signed by a physician, including our Immunizations form
4. Uniform and specific equipment will be discussed the first week of class

Student Selection Process:  The requirements listed above are minimum requirements; however, satisfaction of minimum requirements does not automatically guarantee admission. Admission to the program is a selective process.

The EMT program is a selective admission, limited enrollment program. Admission to Gulf Coast State College does not imply acceptance into the EMT program.

Paramedic program applicants with 6 months or more of emergency medical experience are given preference for selection. The Admissions Committee will review and notify students.

Curriculum:  The EMT program may be completed by Certificate.
