Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

Sonography
The Sonography Program is designed to prepare students to become competent allied health practitioners in diagnostic medical Sonography. Abdominal, vascular, and OB/GYN sonography are taught, as well as other skills required of an entry-level sonographer.

This program is offered to healthcare professionals with an Associate Degree in an allied health field who advance to the certificate courses, or to a well-qualified student who completes the prerequisites as identified in the application packet.

The program has three main focuses: didactic education, clinical experience, and professionalism. These focuses combine to produce a professional sonographer.

The program is committed to the community by graduating students prepared to provide quality health care, to the students by providing quality education, and to the field of Sonography by maintaining the highest of professional standards.

The program is designed to prepare the student for employment as an entry-level Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. The Sonographer is skilled by academic and clinical training, and should be able to perform ultrasound examinations under the supervision of a qualified physician.

The program curriculum includes all courses required for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Associates Degree in Applied Science. A minimum grade of "C" (74.5%) must be achieved in all courses identified in the program curriculum, including courses required for admission.  The application deadline is September 15th each year, and the program starts every January. The duration of the program is 24 months.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a selective admission, limited enrollment program of 15 students. Admission to Gulf Coast State College does not imply acceptance into the Sonography Program.

After being accepted in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, the courses in the curriculum are progressive in nature, with one course building on the preceding course. Because of this progressive relationship, all courses in a term must be completed with a grade of "C", or better, in order to continue to the next term.

Deadline for program application is September 15th each year.

Class begins every January in the Spring semester.
