Citation Styles

Citations are used to document the original work upon which your scholarly work is based. A citation is the information needed by the reader of your paper to identify or to locate a referenced work quickly and efficiently. A citation should include the author, title, date of publication, and other data. A list of these referenced citations is included at the end of the paper.

American Psychological Association (APA) style was developed for the social and behavioral sciences; it requires both in-text citations and a reference list. See our guide APA.

Modern Language Association (MLA) style is generally used for language and literature papers at GCSC. MLA style features brief parenthetical citations in the text along with an alphabetical list of works cited at the end. See our guide MLA.

The Chicago Manual of Style presents two basic documentation systems, the humanities style (notes and bibliography) and the author-date system most often used in physical or natural sciences and social sciences. See our guide Chicago Turabian.

Turabian” refers to Kate L. Turabian’s Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. It is essentially the Chicago style modified for student writers with a focus on source citation, style (punctuation, capitalization, etc.), and paper format.
