Building Construction Technology

Building Construction

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for careers in the construction industry. The focus of the program is both commercial and residential construction.

Students completing the program typically are employed as supervisors, job foremen, or office support staff, performing such duties as purchasing or estimating. Stu-dents with previous building experience may seek to obtain either a county or state contractor's license.

The primary goal of the program is to prepare students for employment after graduation. However, some students elect to transfer to an upper division school to seek a baccalaureate degree in building construction once they have completed the general education requirements of an A.A. degree.

Construction workers build, maintain and repair buildings using material such as metal, wood, stone, brick, glass, concrete, and composition substances.

The workers perform many duties that require the operation of motorized equipment and power tools. The work can be physically strenuous and requires climbing, kneeling, stretching and lifting.

Skills necessary include physical dexterity, problem solving, strong verbal and written communication, organization, bookkeeping and strong inter-personal skills.
