The HCJFS Children’s Services Division is legally responsible for taking reports of child abuse and neglect; investigating reports; and acting to protect child victims and children at risk of harm.

Role of Children's Services

Children's Services caseworkers' primary interest is the safety of the children. When abuse or neglect is reported, trained social workers investigate the allegation. If they determine abuse or neglect has occurred, caseworkers will try to help parents or caregivers deal with the issues that have led to abuse or neglect. In many cases, this may involve services aimed at improving the safety of their children at home. Children's Services also:

• Works with families and partners in making decisions that affect children
• Provides referrals to services to help families including:
  • Visitation
  • Parent education
  • Drug abuse screening and treatment
  • Mental health counseling
  • Emergency housing
• If necessary for the safety of the children, seeks protective temporary or permanent custody of children through Juvenile Court
• Places children in temporary care with relatives (kinship care) or foster parents if the children cannot be safe in their own homes
• Recruits and trains adoptive families
• Prepares children for adoption and arranges for post-adoption services to families
• Provides training in independent living skills for older teens
