What are some credible sites about health?

• American Medical Association

  Contains current news as well as select full-text articles from journals such as JAMA, American Medical News and Archives of Internal Medicine.

• American Red Cross

  Site contains current news releases, a Red Cross virtual museum, summaries of services offered, programs and publications.

• Center for Disease Control and Prevention

  The CDC monitors all aspects of public health and works to prevent and control infectious and chronic diseases, injuries, workplace hazards, disabilities and environmental health threats. The CDC also maintains national health statistics.

• Food and Drug Administration

  A site to provide accurate, timely information about food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices regulated by the FDA. Also includes a hot topics section.

• Healthfinder

  Hand-selected directory of more than 1,500 consumer health related Web sites.

• Illinois Health Statistics

  These statistics, compiled by the Illinois Department of Health, cover topics like births, deaths, marriages, divorces, infant mortality and more.

• Medlineplus.gov

  From the National Library of Medicine, this site brings together consumer health information from various reputable government agencies. It includes simple health information, medical encyclopedia, tutorials and drug/supplement information.

• Mayo Clinic

  An index of articles on several topics, including diseases and conditions, drug information and healthy living. The site also contains health quizzes.

• Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

  Information provided on this Web site is based on reports sent to the Center for Disease Control by state health departments. You can find quick statistics, information on current health issues and more. The Health Topics A to Z link is a quick way to find information on your topic. Full-text issues also are available under the "Weekly Report" section.

• Merck Manuals Online

  Two great resources from Merck. The classic medical text: The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy is available online. The 2nd Home Edition is based on the Merck Manual, but written in everyday language.

• National Cancer Institute

  Information on cancer research programs and funding, clinical trials and statistics.

• National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

  Information on complementary and alternative medicine, including health, research, training, clinical trials and more.

• National Institutes of Health

  Publications and fact sheets, news items, grant opportunities, and more are available at this searchable site.

• Reuters Health

  News items from Reuters for health professionals, industry workers and product consumers. The site is updated daily.

• State Health Facts Online

  You can search for individual state profiles or compare data between states in categories including women's health, medical costs, Medicare, HIV/AIDS and more.

• World Health Organization

  Health-related statistics on WHO member countries, which includes health topics from AIDS to Zoonoses. Press releases and upcoming events also are featured on the site.
