HCC Hosting Local Social Media Conference June 21

Every business and organization can benefit from a social media marketing strategy. If you already have one, are you doing it right? If you’re doing it right, could you be doing it even better?

The @Midwest Social Media Conference on June 21, 2012 at Heartland Community College’s Astroth Community Education Center may be able to help you answer that question. @Midwest is a one day forum where experts address small- to mid-sized business professionals who seek a presence in social media or are looking to enhance their practices.

This year’s keynote speakers include Tim Miles, consultant, author, and owner of The Imagination Advisory Group, and Joe Strupek, assistant vice president of public affairs at State Farm. Join social media professionals from across the nation to learn about the latest ideas and trends that are shaping the future of social media. Renowned experts, business leaders, and bestselling authors will share how you can take your social media presence to the next level—right in the heart of Central Illinois.

HCC Joins The Democracy Commitment

Heartland Community College has joined a national effort to promote the central role of civic education by becoming a signatory campus to the national community college initiative, The Democracy Commitment (TDC). HCC has long promoted such efforts through the work of its Political Engagement Project, which has sponsored campus events and efforts within the classroom to promote the development of civic knowledge, skills and motivation.

Becoming a signatory campus to The Democracy Commitment brings national attention to HCC's efforts and enhances the College’s position for grant and resource acquisition to further its civic education and engagement efforts. TDC campuses receive support through a series of valuable connections with national organizations, such as the American Association of State Colleges & Universities and The New York Times Knowledge Network, and with an existing network of U.S. community college campuses that are also intentionally engaging in civic work for the benefit of dialogue and problem solving regarding civic learning in the classroom and projects on campus.

As a TDC campus, HCC will make a public commitment to the central role of civic education; provide intentional support for both curricular and extracurricular programs that build civic skills among students, especially focusing on projects that support students in doing public work; provide for faculty and staff development in civic engagement; build partnerships with local civic, non-profit and governmental agencies whose primary work is the social and economic development of local communities; and develop joint regional and national programs with partner universities, and with national higher education associations.

HCC’s commitment to democracy building is currently featured in a spotlight on The Democracy Commitment website http://thedemocracycommitment.org/2012/03/23/campus-spotlight-heartland-community-college/.  For more information on The Democracy Commitment, visit www.TheDemocracyCommitment.org and for more information on HCC’s Political Engagement Project efforts visit http://www.heartland.edu/pep.
