Once you enroll at Heartland Community College, you become part of our campus community. Student Engagement provides a supportive, values-based environment to help you get the most out of your Heartland Community College experience. Through this experience you’ll learn how to be an active leader in a complex and ever-changing society.

How do I get involved?

Heartland offers many ways for you to become engaged in campus life. Join in campus life, take advantage of resources and participate in campus activities.

• Student Clubs and Organizations
  From academic excellence to arts and entertainment, student clubs and organizations offer you a way to take your interests to the next level. See what student clubs and organizations Heartland has to offer.
• Student Government Association
  If leadership or politics is your passion, get involved in the Heartland Community College Student Government Association (SGA). This group, elected from the student body, represents and advocates for students by communicating with College administrators and the Board of Trustees on issues impacting students at Heartland. • Heartland Activities Committee
  The Heartland Activities Committee (HAC) plans and presents entertainment and educational programs for Heartland students, employees and community members. If entertainment or event planning is your forte, this committee is for you. Learn more about the Heartland Activities Committee.
• The Spectator (Student Newspaper)
  Considering a career in journalism? Heartland’s student newspaper, The Spectator, could be the creative outlet for you. Published August through May with a special issue created for new student orientation, The Spectator is written and edited by Heartland students through the guidance of their advisor. • Intramurals
  Intramurals are fun, recreational on-campus sports activities targeted at the everyday athlete. Participation in intramurals is open to Heartland students and employees, giving those who do not compete at a higher level the opportunity to be active and promote wellness and healthy competition.

Take Advantage of...

• Hawk's Nest (Game Room)
  Need a place to kick back? Visit the Hawk's Nest, a recreational area featuring a pool table, air hockey table, board games, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and computers available to you as a Heartland student. A current student ID is required to use the equipment. The Nest is open at the Normal campus in room SCB 1601 during the fall and spring semesters Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Leadership for Life Resources
  Leadership takes many forms. Sometimes it is very formal and structured while other times it is informal and subtle. The Leadership for Life series is a collection of guides to help student club and organization leaders develop leadership skills. Topics include:
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Effective Decision Making
  • Financial Management
  • Goal Setting
  • Marketing
  • Tips to Run Effective Meetings

Participate in...

• New Student Orientation
  This program, designed for new students, helps you connect with the campus and campus resources, meet other new students, ask questions of current students and talk with professional support staff. Learn more about new student orientation.
• Welcome Week
  Welcome Week, which takes place during the first week of the fall semester, features events that encourage students to get involved in clubs and organizations and to take full advantage of the resources available at Heartland.
