Student Resources

At Highland, our faculty and staff are committed to helping students achieve their goals. We have adopted an Early Alert program to help students who may encounter challenges. Students who get the help they need early in the semester are often able to successfully complete their courses. 

Whether a student is referred through the Early Alert program or simply in need of assistance, the following FREE services are available to all students:

Advising Located on the first floor of Building H (Student/Conference Center)

Student advisors are available to help you schedule appropriate classes, interpret the results of placement tests and other assessments, discuss your career goals, and develop a plan to address any academic and career development concerns. Schedule an appointment with an advisor via email, by visiting Ask an Advisor or by calling 815.599.3573.

Career Services Located on the first floor of Building H (Student/Conference Center)

Students often benefit from further development in their career goals. The Career Center offers a variety of assessments and exploratory tools to help you attain your personal and professional goals. Make an appointment with the Career Center by calling 815.599.3536.

College CoachesLocated in M147

Need a mentor that's already familiar with Highland? Our College Coaches have proven academic and interpersonal skills that can assist fellow students in navigating college processes and accessing beneficial services. Your Coach will meet with you regularly and is likely to become a trusted guide in helping you meet your goals. Request a Coach in the Success Center or by contacting Tracey Williams.

Computing Resources Located in M147 and online

Orientation to Highland computer programs and services is available on a walk-in basis in the Success Center. Online tutorials for our software programs are available here.

Counseling CenterLocated in M121

In the event a student is facing difficult personal and/or academic hurdles, our Counseling Center provides a free assessment service and an opportunity to speak confidentially with a qualified counselor.

To schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center, contact Virginia Ware or Liz Gerber. For urgent situations email the Counseling Center, or call Virginia Ware at 815.599.3588 or Liz Gerber at 815.599.3531. For emergencies, contact 911.

Project SucceedLocated in M111

Students who qualify for Project Succeed (by being a first-generation college student, a student with a disability or meeting income guidelines) receive free additional advising services as well as specialized instruction and assistance. Project Succeed is a great place to connect with a staff members ready to be your guide. To apply for Project Succeed services, contact Bonnie Hale.

Success Center Located in M-147

Highland’s Success Center offers many services including study groups, writing assistance, study skills development and assistance with ADA services. Visit the Success Center online or in-person to request service. Also feel free to email them or call 815.599.3446 for more information.

Testing Center Located in M-113 (inside Success Center)

Proctored exams for HCC classes, p lacement tests, as well as testing for online and hybrid classes are all offered free of charge by the Testing Center. Contact them at 815.599.3680 or via email to determine your testing needs. Students requiring special testing accommodations should contact ADA Services at 815.599.3582 or via email.

TutoringLocated in M-147 and in Building R outside of the math labs

Individual tutoring services have helped many students master challenging subjects. Peer tutors have already completed courses in the subject area and have been recommended by the instructor. Math, English and Chemistry tutors are also available on a walk-in basis.
