The program was initially formed in 1989 as a foundation through an executive order of the governor. It was transferred to the Industrial Extension Service (IES) at North Carolina State University in 2001.
You can participate in North Carolina Awards for Excellence at four levels.
Involvement is the beginning level for organizations with an interest in adopting and applying performance improvement principles. This award level is available year-round.

North Carolina Awards for Excellence facilitators at NC State IES will provide an on-site NCAfE –Involvement Level 1 - Collaborative assessment consisting of 1.5 days of on-site training.

The intermediate level for organizations that have demonstrated a serious commitment to the use of performance management principles. Your organization prepares an application based on the Baldrige criteria for performance excellence.
A Baldrige expert will examine your organization’s application objectively and identify strengths and opportunities for improvement in all Categories in the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. A feedback report will be provided which is a detailed, individualized, written assessment of your organization’s strengths and opportunities for improvement based on your application. Here are the components of the report:
A presentation of your Level 2 award by the North Carolina Awards for Excellence will be scheduled for presentation at an organizational event of your choice. In addition, a press release will be disseminated by our Communication Department.
An advanced level for organizations that have demonstrated significant progress in building processes with results clearly linked to a robust management system. Awards are based on score.
At this level organizations have demonstrated significant progress in building sound and notable processes with clearly defined results directly attributable to a systematic, well-deployed approach. These organizations have many practices from which other organizations can learn. Your organization prepares an application based on the Baldrige criteria for performance excellence.
A team of trained experts will examine your organization objectively and identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. These Baldrige examiners will identify achievements and improvements in all Categories in the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. After the examiners engage in an independent review, consensus review, and 3 day site visit they will produce a feedback report. The feedback report is a detailed, individualized, written assessment of your organization’s strengths and opportunities for improvement based on your application. Here are the components of the report:

The highest level for organizations that are outstanding examples of high performance and exhibit “world class” processes that serve as role models.
These organizations continue to improve and build upon outstanding results and systems. Achievement of this level aligns to a national site visit and is based on score.It is the same process as level 3.
