Community Rehabilitation Program looks to certification to help be the differentiator
On Friday, October 21st at 11:30 a.m., Johnston County Industries (JCI) will accept a banner from North Carolina State University’s Industrial Extension Service (IES) as recognition of their AS 9100C certification. The celebration will take place at JCI’s facility on 1100 East Preston Street, Selma.
IES provides coaching, implementation assistance and pre-assessment audits to help clients like JCI to incorporate the AS9100 requirements as part of their existing quality management system. AS9100 certification is the gold standard in the aviation, space and defense industry and has been adopted worldwide as the quality management system standard for aviation manufacturing. It incorporates all the requirements of ISO 9001, while adding additional requirements relating to the aviation, space and defense industry. Version C is the lastest revision available for the standard.
JCI is an entrepreneurial, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to empowering people with disabilities or disadvantages to succeed through training and employment, also known as a Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP). JCI evaluates, trains, and returns individuals with vocational barriers to employment. In addition to employing Johnston County residents, JCI places persons with disabilities, who have received services at JCI, in employment. According to JCI, last year was a record year, having placed 168 individuals with barriers in jobs of their choice.
The company has been ISO 9001 certified for seven years, but it was customer, AAR Mobility of Goldsboro that pushed for the aerospace standard. JCI processes cable assemblies for military vehicles and military equipment for AAR Mobility.
“This certification is a reflection of what we do,” said Darren Rosado, quality manager for JCI. “We can go back for any given product, any given day to confirm the team that produced it and the processes used,” he continued. “We are accountable.”
Rosado also feels that the skills and knowledge obtained from implementing and maintaining the AS9100 standard is beneficial to those receiving services as it is one more valuable tool for their toolbox as they embark upon their new careers.
JCI, along with fellow CRP, Tri-County Industries of Rocky Mount, obtained a Worker Incumbent Grant to fund training and consultation received from NC State IES. http://www.jcindustries.com/
