UF Admissions Decision Release - February 10, 2012 Special System Load Event

Approximately 29,000 students have applied for admission to the University of Florida for the fall 2012 term. Applicants can first learn of admission decisions beginning at 6:00pm on February 10.

UF Information Technology anticipates that computing systems load will be near or at capacity during the early evening hours of Friday, February 10. During this time period, interactive processing in support of release of freshman applicant admission decisions is our top priority. Based on past years, applicants will begin logging in hours before the time that admissions decisions become available. This causes an enormous spike in the processing load for UF systems. The spike begins mid-afternoon and continues until peaking during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

In order to avoid time-outs and similar “negative experiences” for our applicants, it is necessary that we make 100% of our capacity available exclusively for this purpose, during the approximately four hours of peak demand. To accommodate the applicant demand, at approximately 12:00pm, UFIT will shut down all mainframe system partitions except the primary production partition on Friday afternoon, February 10. The university's daily 'batch' processing will remain disabled until after the admissions notification load has substantially subsided.

2012-2013 Tech Fee - Funding Cycle Now Open!

The Technology Fee collected from students each year funds IT-based projects proposed by students, faculty, and staff. The deadline for 2012 "Tech Fee" proposals is February 28. Last year the Tech Fee funded, among other projects, university-wide access to lynda.com and additional Netbooks for use in the libraries. Do you have an idea on how the university should use this year's Tech Fee funds? Read the Tech Fee article in the UFIT Newsletter to learn more.

Project to Enhance Mobile Connectivity at UF Begins January 2012

To assist with the growing need for mobile connectivity on campus, the University of Florida is installing a neutral-host distributed antenna system (DAS).

The DAS will increase the capacity, coverage, and performance of wireless technologies (such as cellular, paging, and Wi-Fi), and provide a platform for a unified wireless management strategy. The first portion of the project will cover Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Installation for the stadium DAS begins this month, and will be completed in time for the first Gator football game of the 2012 season. AT&T Mobility is designing the DAS system for many other buildings on campus, including the new East Campus Office Building, Shands&UF buildings, Innovation Hub, the Libraries (West and Smathers) and the O'Connell Center. The anticipated project timeline to cover the entire campus is two years.
