Kent State names copyright law scholar-educator as new SLIS director The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University announces the appointment of Tomas A. Lipinski, J.D., LL.M., Ph.D., as its new director. Lipinski will join the department in January 2013 to replace Richard Rubin, Ph.D., who left in 2010 to become Kent State’s associate provost for extended education. SLIS Associate Professor Don A. Dateline Delhi Website Launches, Features Multimedia Projects Eighteen communication students and three professors from Kent State University spent 10 days of March in Delhi, India reporting on culture, environment, the economy and more for DatelineDelhi.org, a multimedia news website and product of the International Storytelling course. The site officially launched on Monday, April 30 showcasing student photography, video and feature stories from India.

Four Kent State Students Earn $3,000 Scholarships Six area college students were selected for scholarships in memory of longtime Akron Beacon Journal editor John S. Knight and public relations professional Ludel Sauvageot. A seventh student has received a scholarship from the Akron Press Club. This year Kent State students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication earned four of the seven coveted $3,000 scholarships.

Kent State Students Present “Children of the Holocaust” Exhibition, March 11 Over the past few months, the photographers, writers and designers of the Kent State School of Journalism and Mass Communication have joined together in a collaborative effort to tell the stories of Holocaust survivors and their families. The event included honoring IAKM founder and former program director Thomas J. Froehlich, Ph.D., with the creation of an annual award in his name to recognize an outstanding student in the program. Kent State SLIS faculty receive federal grant for $219,000+ to improve access to digital resources Two faculty members in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University, Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Karen Gracy, Ph.D., have received a National Leadership Grant in the amount of $219,386 from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The funds will be used to help improve access to digital resources within and beyond the library world through what is known as “Linked Open Data (LOD).”

Pulitzer-winning Photojournalist to Screen New Film April 4 Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and University of Florida Professor of Journalism John Kaplan will return to Ohio Monday, April 4 for a screening of his award-winning film, Not As I Pictured. Media Advisory re: TV Coverage of 40th Anniversary of May 4 Kent State University is providing a series of live uplink coverage opportunities to network outlets and local television stations to assist in coverage of this year’s 40th anniversary of the May 4, 1970, incident in which four Kent State students were killed and nine wounded by Ohio National Guardsmen during a Vietnam War protest. The events of May 4 played an important part in the civil rights and anti-war movement. May 4’s significance in American history was further confirmed when the May 4 site was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, a remarkable achievement for a site that is less than 50 years old.

Hyde Park Forum winners announced Three Kent State University students earned top honors in the annual Hyde Park Forum held Tuesday, April 6, in the Kent Student Center Ballroom. The annual persuasive speech competition, organized by COMM, featured eight finalists chosen from students enrolled in the Introduction to Human Communication class during the 2009-2010 academic year.
