Conifer Garden

The conifer garden is one of the first gardens visitors will encounter when entering the Draime Estate Gardens through the main gate.  Although at first glance it appears to be a monoculture of evergreen specimens, when one takes a closer look, the diversity in color, shape, texture, and size among these needled specimens is quite evident.

The conifer garden is designed as two island beds planted mostly with dwarf conifers.  Each bed allows ample spacing between the specimens to allow each evergreen full growth and to provide the visitor great views of each individual plant.  The dark brown mulched beds surrounded by wide pathways of turfgrass provide a great back drop for ultimate viewing of the dwarf specimens.  The conifer garden, with all of its uniquely shaped and sized specimens, provides a bit of foreshadowing as to the great use of sculpture that visitors will experience throughout the Draime gardens.

Some of the more noteworthy specimens include a Japanese Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata), a trio of gold Oriental Spruce (Picea orientalis 'Skylands'), a uniquely shaped Weeping White Pine (Pinus strobus 'Pendula'), an unusual form of Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani), and a charming collection of Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca 'Conica').
