Description:
Your student type/admission status is:
- have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- want to take a limited number of courses at Kent State University but do not currently have an interest in pursuing a degree
- have taken less than six graduate course hours at Kent State University in the past.
(examples include, but are not limited to individuals that want to attend classes for job enhancement or personal enrichment.)
Guest
The following requirements/restrictions apply to GUEST student status:
If you decide to pursue a degree program or continue taking courses after 6 semester hours have been attempted, you must apply for regular admission.
You must meet all prerequisites for courses (or obtain permission of the instructor), and must obtain approval from the corresponding program coordinator.
You are not eligible for financial aid.
If you have been denied admission to graduate studies, or are under dismissal from the university you are not eligible for GUEST student status.
Some departments do not allow guest students. Be sure to check with the department offering the class(es) you want to take to be sure that they allow enrollment of GUEST students.

- don’t want to earn a graduate degree but do want to take a limited number of graduate courses for self-improvement, intellectual curiosity or expansion of areas of professional expertise.
Non-degree
The following requirements/restrictions apply to Non-degree student status:
You cannot transfer credit earned at another university.
If you decide to pursue a graduate degree, be aware that no more than 12 semester hours of non-degree credit may be petitioned to satisfy requirements for a degree program.
For some graduate degree programs only 6 semester credit hours can be transferred into the program
If you have been denied admission to graduate studies, or are under dismissal from the university you are not eligible for NON-DEGREE student status
Description:

- have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution or have met the requirements for a baccalaureate degree that will be awarded prior to beginning your graduate study.
Kent State University is authorized to grant 14 master’s degrees in over 200 areas of study.
Master’sDescription:
Your student type/admission status is:
- already hold a master’s degree and are seeking an educational specialist degree (Ed.S.).
This is a practitioner degree, not an intermediate step between a master’s degree and a doctoral degree. It provides preparation for a specialty position within the field of professional education.
Educational SpecialistDescription:
Your student type/admission status is:
- have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- have earned a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (certain exclusions may apply; please consult the graduate catalog to verify requirements for specific programs).
- are interested in becoming a professional scholar, college and university teacher, or independent researcher in private, industrial, or governmental research institutions.
Doctoral

Graduate certificate programs deliver focused instruction and formalized guidance in a flexible manner.
Certificate
The following requirements/restrictions for obtaining CERTIFICATE student status:
- You must meet the admission requirements for the specific graduate certificate being sought.
- You must declare your intent to earn the certificate on the application.
Description:
Your student type/admission status is:
- have already earned a graduate degree from Kent State University and want to continue in graduate course work without pursuing another degree program.
- don’t want to earn a graduate degree but do want to take a limited number of graduate courses for self-improvement, intellectual curiosity or expansion of areas of professional expertise.
Reapplication
The following requirements/restrictions apply to REAPPLICATION student status:
- Your admission status is good for up to six years.
Description:
Your student type/admission status is:
have previously taken classes at Kent State University either as a graduate student and want to continue coursework in the same program, and have not exceeded these time limits for a program:
- 6 years for Master’s coursework
- 10 years for Doctoral coursework
Re-enrollment/Former Description:
Your student type/admission status is:
- are enrolled in a graduate degree program in good standing at other university and want to take course work from Kent State University.
(examples include, but are not limited to individuals that want to take a specific class at Kent State University that complements or satisfies the degree requirements for a program at another university.)
Transient
You must do the following:
- Complete the application online.
- Print the transient permission form and obtain the signature of the dean at your home institution for submission.
- Submit the completed form to Kent State University. Please note that your application is not considered completed until this form is received by Kent State University.
