Kent State University at Blossom Music Center

The Kent/Blossom Arts Programs, organized within the College of the Arts, offer advanced summer study in art, music, and theatre.  These programs complement the annual performance season of Blossom Music Center, summer home of The Cleveland Orchestra.  University facilities include Porthouse Theatre and Eells Art Gallery, located on the grounds of the Blossom Music Center.

These professionally oriented programs emphasize intensive, individualized study with prominent visiting master artists and resident faculty, as well as principal members of The Cleveland Orchestra.  Students are selected through national competitive auditions, interviews, and portfolio reviews.  Kent/Blossom alumni are associated with major professional arts organizations worldwide.  These include the Berlin, Boston, Cleveland, New York, and Vienna orchestras; the Metropolitan, Houston, and La Scala operas; art museums in New York, San Francisco, Mexico City, and Paris; and dozens of dramatic companies and major theatres, including Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and the Kennedy Center in  Washington, D.C.

Kent/Blossom Art

The exchange of creative concepts and techniques drawn from diverse visual media is emphasized in Kent/Blossom Art.  Students are encouraged to explore these interrelationships through lectures and studio demonstrations by visiting professionals, concentrated personal creative effort, and criticism of that work by visiting and resident faculty.  Exhibitions of faculty and student work and informal interactions among students and faculty emphasize the exploration of creative ideas and values beyond each student's primary medium.  Areas of emphasis include painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass and printmaking.

Kent/Blossom Music

String, woodwind, horn and piano students develop professional skills through intensive study with visiting master artists, members of The Cleveland Orchestra, and university faculty.  Experiences focus on major works of the chamber music repertoire augmented by studies in orchestral repertoire and techniques and solo master classes.  Rigorous daily coaching and rehearsal schedules culminate in performances on the campus and at Blossom Music Center, where participants also attend open rehearsals and concerts of The Cleveland Orchestra.

Porthouse Theatre

Performance and production training in the context of a professional summer company are offered through Porthouse Theatre.  Students work within a 10-week period with the Porthouse Theatre company to create a production season alongside Equity actors and professional guest directors, designers, and technologists.  These artists lead a range of studio and workshop experiences with participating students beyond the public production activity of the professional company.
