Kent State University Fashion School Receives High Ranking Both Nationally and Internationally Kent State University's Fashion School was recently ranked third in the country and 13th in the world by the online fashion magazine Fashionista.com. The school, under the direction of J.R. Campbell, offers two undergraduate degrees in fashion design or fashion merchandising. Nearly topping 2000 students for fall 2010, the school features a garment center studio in New York City and opportunities to study abroad in Paris, Florence, London and Hong Kong. The Fashion School is one of only 13 member schools in the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Kent State Art Professors Each Receive $20,000 Arts Fellowship The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC) of Cuyahoga County has awarded two Kent State University professors of art each with a $20,000 Creative Workforce Fellowship (CWF). International Music Troupe to Come to East Liverpool International Music Troupe to Come to East Liverpool Mauvais Sort, a Quebec City folk-rock ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Westgate Auditorium in East Liverpool, Ohio. The troupe, named Best Canadian Folk Ensemble of the year in 2006, has performed more than 600 shows in nine countries. Their fifth album, Droit Devant, has been recently released. Mauvais Sort creates world beat rhythms through the use of accordion, violin, guitar, bass, mandolin, drums, percussion and male and female vocals, producing a toe-tapping exercise in joie de vivre. Mauvais Sort is being brought to Northeastern Ohio and the East Liverpool area by the Ohio Arts Council’s International Music and Performing Arts in Communities Tour (IMPACT) that sponsors these free concerts to expose new audiences to art forms from around the world and to build new audiences for the arts. The East Liverpool stop is the final one on a tour that will play Columbus, Wilmington, Wapakoneta, and Cambridge during the month of November. In addition to sponsorship from the Ohio Arts Council, the concert is sponsored by the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, Arts Midwest, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The local performance is also sponsored by Kent State University at East Liverpool; ABLE and Appalachian Cottage Industries; LEEP (Leading Economic and Educational Progress); Shining Reflections; East Liverpool Lions; and the East Liverpool-Wellsville NAACP. The new exhibit, which closes Sept. 4, 2011, showcases the screen legend's performance clothes, which include stage and film costumes spanning Katharine Hepburn's career, as well as apparel she wore for publicity purposes.

Little Prize for Excellence in Printmaking. School of Music Announces Seachrist as Director The College of the Arts at Kent State University has recently named Dr. Denise A. Seachrist as the director of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music, where she has served as interim director since 2008. Previously she served as interim dean for Academic and Student Services, Regional Campuses and as interim assistant dean of the Trumbull Campus. Seachrist earned a Ph.D. in musicology-ethnomusicology from Kent State University, and a master of music in vocal performance from Youngstown State University. She holds a bachelor of music degree from Heidelberg College.

2010 Scripps Spelling Bee Winner a 'Star' Fourteen-year old Anamika Veeramani of North Royalton, winner of the recent 2010 Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. appeared on a different kind of stage last Friday. The fourteen-year old attended and appeared in Porthouse Theatre’s production of the Broadway musical production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on Friday, June 18th.

H. Scott Curfman Appointed Interim Director of Bands The Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music has named H. SCOTT CURFMAN as the Interim Director of Bands. Mr. Curfman will assume these duties and continue as the Director of Athletic Bands, upon the retirement of Dr. Wayne Gorder, who has served with distinction as the Director of Bands for the past 23 years.

Kent Keyboard Series Honors Frederic Chopin's 100th Birthday On April 18, the final concert in this popular concert series will be performed by Donna Lee, Kent State faculty member and Steinway Artist. Kent State Choruses and Orchestra Perform Together Kent State Choruses and Orchestra come together to perform Mozart’s Requiem and perform premiere piece by Thomas Janson. Kent State University and the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music will present two performances commemorating the one-hundredth Anniversary of Kent State University. The concerts will feature the Kent State University Chorale, Women’s Chorus, Men’s Chorus, Kent Chorus, all conducted by Scott MacPherson, director of choral activities and the Kent State Orchestra conducted by Scott Seaton. The concert will be held at Kent State University in Cartwright Hall on May 8 and at Severance Hall, in Cleveland, on May 9.

School of Fashion Faculty Members Receive Prestigious Awards Two faculty members of Kent State University’s School of Fashion recently garnered design-educators’ most outstanding awards at the 2009 International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) annual meeting in Seattle. Assistant Professor Linda Ohrn-McDaniel received the ATEXINC Award for “Textile Design,” and Assistant Professor Vincent Quevedo received two awards: the ITAA Award for a “Design With Historical Reference” and the Lectra Outstanding Faculty Award for the ITAA Design Exhibition, which is the highest award one can receive.
