NYC Studio: Summer Session

June 4 – July 27, 2012
Imagine spending your summer living in the world's largest fashion center -- shopping Madison Avenue and SoHo, strolling Central Park, dining in outdoor cafes, viewing art at the Met, or seeing a Broadway play. All this, while earning 6-12 semester credits in the summer!
Using the city as a guide, this intensive program is designed to immerse students in NYC's vast fashion, arts, and cultural resources. All students are required to take the NY Study Tour (3 credits) and at least one other 3 credit learning opportunity, with the option to register for up to 12 credits.
Learning Opportunities:
NY Study Tour (3 credits) REQUIRED
All students must take the NY Study Tour that includes visits to fashion, arts, and cultural-related sites, presents guest speakers, and provides students with a general orientation to the city.
In addition to NY Study Tour, choose at least ONE of the following:
Fashion Forecasting (3 credits)
Have you ever wondered who spots fashion trends before they are released in the press and in forecasting materials? Fashion Forecasting exposes students to the process of forecasting by examining the techniques the professionals use to determine up-and-coming trends. Students produce a forecasting project focused on a season not yet in print. Prerequisites: all required KSU 30000-level FD&M courses completed or equivalent coursework.
Please note: Guest students, who are planning to sign-up for the Fashion Forecasting class, must complete the Prerequisite Confirmation Form, with required signatures.
The Luxury Market (3 credits)
The goal of this course is to learn, understand, and perceive the luxury market and its parameters. Students will define luxury, identify luxury, and understand its evolution; while defining marketing and analyzing its effects on luxury products and brands. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of the marketing power of luxury brands and the organization of a luxury products company. Course will include various lecturers specialized in the luxury market fields. Prerequisites: none.
Fashion Accessories Design (3 credits)
Course examines organization & operation, merchandising & marketing, and industry trends of the accessories market by individual category. Creative research, designing, sketching, and presenting techniques are explored while constructing a final collection. Course is open to both design and merchandising majors. Prerequisites: none.

21st Century Fashion Designers (3 credits)
Focus on this century's emerging fashion designers through field research, instructor-led site tours, and guest speakers. Students assemble a portfolio of designers studied to include their biographies, clippings of their work, and designer inspirations. Prerequisites: none.
Fashion in the Media (3 credits)
Course will include analysis of the key fashion magazines, and in-depth examination of how they are put together. Through theoretical and practical study of this, students will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of different forms of communication and the contributions editors, writers, stylists and photographers make individually and collectively towards the finished product. Course will also include discussion of how various media interrelate and contribute to the fashion industry as a whole. Course incorporates different forms of writing, editing and interviewing as well as review of the roles of photography, design and styling. Course will focus primarily on printed media but will include discussion of online outlets, television commentary and touch on fashion advertising and PR. Prerequisites: none.
Internships:
Kent State Fashion School students who plan to participate in an internship for credit, while studying in NYC, must enroll in 45092 Internship in Fashion Design & Merchandising (3 credits). This course if offered through the Kent Campus. For further information, please contact your student advisor in The Fashion School.
Prerequisites: minimum grade of C (2.0) in FDM 30083, Junior standing and special approval. Merchandising students are also required to take FDM 30262.
Guest students from other fashion programs are required to set up their internship through their home school.
If you have not met the requirements to participate in an internship for credit, or are not able to sign up through your home school, many employers provide a non-credit option to participate in an internship. The NYC Studio forwards internship opportunities from employers to all students, via email, as they are received.

Most courses are scheduled in the morning or evening to provide students some flexibility in creating a schedule that allows participation in part-time internship, work, or volunteer opportunities. Most courses meet twice per week for 2.5 hours per class.
