Aeronautics Program

The Aeronautics Program at Kent State University has a vision born of a fundamental mandate to serve as the leading academic program in aviation at the tertiary level in Ohio. As such, the Aeronautics Program strives to advance aviation by providing an outstanding education in aviation that produces a cadre of highly competent professionals to operate the National Airspace System in the 21st century and beyond.

This vision encompasses a broad-based education in aviation, the empirical sciences and liberal arts, which would render Aeronautics graduates highly functional and effective in professional aviation within the United States and on the world stage.  Through partnership with professional aviation, Aeronautics graduates from Kent State University would thus remain on the leading edge of innovative advancements in aviation throughout this century and the next.

Aeronautics Program Mission Statement

As an academic unit in the College of Technology, the Aeronautics Division has a mission to work in concert with business, government and industry to enhance technological literacy, education, and training in aviation that is essential to the socioeconomic well-being and workforce development needs of Ohio and the nation.  Specifically, the Aeronautics Program’s mission is fourfold: (1) to prepare students to function effectively as leaders and professionals in the highly dynamic field of aviation; (2) to prepare students for professional positions in flight operations; (3) to prepare students for administrative, managerial, operational, and technical positions in aviation; and (4) to provide students with the academic background and preparation necessary for successful graduate and advanced studies in aviation and allied academic disciplines.

Aeronautical Studies

Mission Statement: The mission of the aeronautical studies area of concentration is to prepare students who have a strong aviation interest yet want to pursue other areas of study with a solid aeronautical education foundation. The flexible curriculum includes aeronautics and technology courses, as well as a substantial number of general electives, providing a background for diverse careers in aeronautics, business and industry.

Through incorporation of a multi-disciplinary curriculum the program purposes to provide a broad-based educational experience while maintaining its core mission of academic excellence in keeping with its responsibilities to the global aviation academy and the vision of excellence of Kent State University

Study Objective: The objective of the Aeronautical Studies area of concentration is to prepare students for professional careers in aviation which require not only foundational knowledge of aviation but also specialized knowledge from associated disciplines.

Study Outcomes: 

  1. Students shall demonstrate a thorough understanding of fundamental aeronautical concepts and practices
  2. Students shall understand attributes of a modern aviation professional
  3. Successful completion of an approved Experiential Learning course

Aeronautical Systems Engineering Technology

Mission Statement: The mission of the aeronautical systems engineering technology area of concentration is to prepare students to enter the field of aeronautical engineering and technology with an emphasis placed on the application of scientific and engineering knowledge combined with technical skills and practical experiences.

In view of the highly technical and precise nature of aerospace design and manufacturing, the program, through its faculty, curriculum, internships, university initiatives and student groups, seeks to assimilate students to the critical and demanding culture of engineering in the aerospace industry.  Matriculated students will possess the knowledge and technical skills necessary to positively impact the nation’s air transport industry consistent with the vision of excellence of Kent State University.

Study Objective:  The objective of the Aeronautical Systems Engineering Technology area of concentration is to prepare students for entry-level professional careers in aviation systems engineering and technology fields.

Study Outcomes
  1. Students shall demonstrate a thorough understanding of fundamental aeronautical concepts and practices
  2. Students shall understand attributes of a modern aviation professional
  3. Students shall apply engineering principles and practices to real-world design problems

Air Traffic Control

Mission Statement: The mission of the air traffic control program is to prepare students for success at the FAA Academy and beyond by providing a broad knowledge of the aviation industry while honing the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in air traffic control training.

The program holds at its core its role as an academic program and its responsibility to the aviation academy to deliver the highest level of Air Traffic Control education available at a post-secondary institution.  Through continual developmental efforts the program purposes to matriculate graduates that exceed the expectations of the Air Traffic Control community and who are able to contribute to the aviation community consistent with vision of excellence of Kent State University.

Study Objective: The objective of the Air Traffic Control area of concentration is to prepare students for careers as professional Air Traffic Controllers upon graduation.  Under the FAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative the program will provide a continual pool of qualified applicants to fill developmental air traffic control specialist positions in both terminal and en route options.

Study Outcomes:
  1. Students shall demonstrate a thorough understanding of fundamental aeronautical concepts and practices
  2. Students shall understand attributes of a modern aviation professional
  3. Students shall demonstrate a fundamental understanding of air traffic basics
  4. Students shall demonstrate the ability to effectively move traffic through all positions within the air traffic control environment

BS Aviation Management

Mission Statement: The mission of the aviation management area of concentration is to prepare students for business and administrative careers throughout the aeronautics industry. The program integrates technical aeronautics courses with business management concepts.

In recognizing that the ultimate success of an aviation enterprise depends on its ability to effectively adapt and apply business principles to the global, diverse and dynamic system that is the aviation industry, the program seeks to matriculate students that posses a skill set comprised of solid foundational management principles, vision and technical skills consistent with those of a successful aviation professional and the vision of excellence of Kent State University.

Study Objective: The objective of the Aviation Management area of concentration is to prepare students to be able to utilize current management theory and comprehensive aviation knowledge base to manage different segments of aviation.

Study Outcomes:
  1. Students shall demonstrate a thorough understanding of fundamental aeronautical concepts and practices
  2. Students shall understand attributes of a modern aviation professional
  3. Students shall demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and application of aviation business management principles

Requirements for BS Degree in Aviation Management

Flight Technology

Mission Statement: The mission of the flight technology area of concentration is to prepare students to be professional pilots and enable them to qualify for Federal Aviation Administration certificates and ratings required for giving professional flight and ground instruction, commercial and instrument operations in business and regional airline operations.

In recognizing its integral role as a part of the global aviation academy, the program purposes not only to matriculate students but also to raise the quality and safety of the nation's air transport industry while at the same time creating a culture of excellence and professionalism.

Study Objective: The objective of the Flight Technology area of concentration is to prepare students for entry-level positions as a professional pilot.

Study Outcomes:

  1. Students shall demonstrate a thorough understanding of fundamental aeronautical concepts and practices
  2.  Students shall understand attributes of a modern aviation professional
  3.  Students should demonstrate an ability to apply aeronautical knowledge and skills as well as communicate that knowledge to students as a flight instructor
  4.  Students should posses the knowledge and skills to obtain a Commercial Pilot Airplane Multiengine Land with Instrument rating
