About Communication

In the 21st Century, we are in the midst of a communication and information technology revolution. Human communication is being transformed by technological, global, and cultural changes. Human interaction and creation of shared meaning through communication messages have increased in importance to everyone. From early cave drawings to the Internet, satellite, and wireless technologies we have connected and continue to communicate through a multitude of channels.

Communication happens face-to-face, through IM-ing, video games, text messaging, cell phones, and social media such as YouTube, Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites.  Communication creates the global village. This is the most exciting time in our history to study communication. Scholars and students in the School of Communication Studies are studying all facets of human communication in current and ever evolving media environments.

With the communication and information technology revolution foremost on our minds, we the members of the School of Communication Studies pledge:

  • To keep our teaching and scholarship on the pulse of the communication and information technology revolution.

  • To teach with passion a challenging curriculum that covers the traditions of the field of communication, the current context, and the potential for tomorrow.

  • To enhance the use of new communication and information technologies and the exploration of human interaction in the areas of persuasive, interpersonal, organizational, mediated, and applied communication.

  • To pursue a robust research agenda by faculty and students that examines the full range of human communication.

  • To pursue academic and applied undergraduate and master’s programs that build on the theoretical foundations of communication and connect to real-world applications, strategies, and tactics.

  • To facilitate student success with careful and knowledgeable advising, and through the cultivation of their personal and professional development.

  • To provide engaging co-curricular opportunities that give students the opportunity to build on their communication skills and knowledge.

  • To offer extended programs such as Cleveland Communication Day, Communication Expo, Hyde Park Forum, and a Faculty Speakers Bureau for exposure and networking experiences with the community, region, and beyond.
