Proctored Testing Available for Online Students
Though courses are web-based, you will need to take some exams in a proctored setting. Proctored testing can occur in the classroom with your instructor, with the ProctorU remote test proctoring service, or at a physical testing facility on-campus or off-campus.
To get started with proctored testing, please follow the steps below:
- First, check with your syllabus and/or directly with your instructor on any available testing sessions being offered on a campus. Typically, these on-campus sessions will be held at the instructor's "home campus" or the campus that they tend to spend the most time. Follow the guidelines of your instructor regarding testing and how to attend these sessions.
- If you are unable to attend your instructor's testing sessions on-campus, the ProctorU remote test proctoring service is your next option. Through your computer's web cam and high-speed internet connection, you can take your exam wherever you may be, whenever it is convenient for you. As long as you schedule your exam at least three business days in advance of when you would like to take the exam, there is no fee to you; should you schedule with less than three days notice, ProctorU will charge you between $5 and $10 for the privilege of taking the exam with less notice. To schedule your exam and to find out more about the ProctorU service, please visit www.proctoru.com/kent. If you do not see your exam listed on the ProctorU website, please contact your instructor; the ProctorU service is only available for online courses (those that are 100% online, 100% online with set meeting times, or at least 50% online) and your course may not be eligible if it is a traditional face-to-face course. If you are enrolled in an online course and do not see your exam, please ask that your instructor to contact ProctoredTesting@kent.edu to get started with the ProctorU service.
- If you are unable to attend your instructor's testing sessions or use the ProctorU service, then you will need to schedule a testing appointment with one of the campus testing centers or with an approved off-campus facility. Please note that on-campus testing centers have limited capacity and testing hours so ProctorU will be your most flexible option for scheduling exams.
For your convenience, we have provided several locations where you can take the exams with a proctor. You are permitted to find your own proctor and location (all costs associated will be your responsibility). However, the proctor and location you select must be approved by the instructor at least five business days prior to the exam date.
Proctor Identification and Approval Form (for proctors outside Kent State University).
What a proctor does:
- Verify the identity of the student.
- Verify that the student took the exam without use of unauthorized books, notes, or reference aides of any kind.
- Remain in the room while the student takes the exam.
- Verify that the student did not leave the room during the exam.
- Collect all the papers and questions at the conclusion of the exam.
- Sign an examination cover sheet verifying that the exam was supervised under the proper conditions, if required by the instructor.
- Return the exam to the faculty member per the faculty member's instructions.
A proctor is usually someone who is employed full-time in education. Relatives, direct supervisors, or church leaders are not approved proctors. There are several proctor sites with which Kent State University works; those are listed below. You can also choose an alternate site, but must submit a request to do so five business days prior to the test date--instructions are at the bottom of this page.
How Physical Test Proctoring Works:
- You select the proctor site that is most convenient to you, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CALL THE SITE AND MAKE A RESERVATION FOR TESTING.
- If you are testing at a Kent State University campus, please have the instructor contact that campus with details of the exam prior to the scheduling of the exam and to authorize the campus to administer the test to you.
- If you are testing somewhere other than a Kent State University campus, At least five business days before your exam, fill out and submit the online form (.Doc) to notify (KSU or instructor) of your proctoring arrangement. If you are planning to use a proctoring site OTHER than those on the list below, see the bottom of this page for proctor qualifications.
- Arrive at the testing location promptly at the scheduled time. Students arriving late may be asked to reschedule their appointments based upon facility resources.
- Take the exam at the testing location; the proctor will administer the exam exactly to the directions provided by the instructor. Questions that arise about the exam should be directed to the instructor after the testing has completed.
- The exam will be returned to the instructor per the instructions provided by the instructor.
A few things you need to know about proctor sites:
- Proctor sites MAY charge fees for their services. The student is responsible for paying all fees for proctoring. We work to provide sites that are free or charge minimal fees. The list below includes the fee charged by the site. If you plan to use an alternate site when you call for an appointment you should ask that site if a fee is charged.
- If you have any questions regarding suitable proctors, contact your instructor.

Rescheduling with less than 48 hours’ notice will be considered a cancellation which will require a full weeks’ notice to reschedule the exam.
