1. How many M.A.T graduates has Kent State University had since 1987?

There have been 870 Secondary-certified graduates from 1987 to 2011 inclusive.

2. Do all M.A.T. graduates find teaching positions?

More than 80% of M.A.T. graduates have been working as teachers for one to 10 years. This is a higher employment rate than our undergraduate secondary teachers.

3. How large are the M.A.T. cohorts?

We usually run 3 cohorts of 15 to 20 students. These cohorts help establish a more cohesive and collegial program.

4. What are M.A.T.'s prepared to teach?

M.A.T's are licensed in Secondary Earth Sciences, Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Science, Integrated Social Studies, Foreign Language, Life Sciences, Life Science/Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Dance, Family and Consumer Studies I & II, Health, Integrated Business, Music, Technology Education, and Visual Arts.

5. How do potential employers view MAT graduates?

What distinguishes MAT candidates is their maturity, a demonstrated work ethic, and, on average, even greater altruism than measured in our pool of baccalaureate candidates (using Douglas Heath's model). Most of the schools who hire our MAT graduates do so because of these characteristics.

6. Can any college graduate get into the M.A.T. program? What are your basic requirements for an M.A.T. applicant?

To answer the first part of the question, NO. We receive many more applications than we can accept, so we are selective.

To answer the second part, we require a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, a GPA of 2.75 (or greater), acceptable GRE scores (400+), at least two letters of reference, verification of moral character, a thousand word essay on "Why I want to be a teacher," and appropriate work and/or volunteer experiences. Applications must be completed and submitted before February 15 in order for a candidate to be considered for a place in the cohort starting in mid-June of that year. 7. How long does your program last and what does it cost?

The program lasts 11 months and is very intense in both time and effort required. For Ohio residents, the program will cost about $19,000 including tuition, fees, and books based on estimates from the 2010-2011 catalog. This does not include extra coursework which may need to be completed in the content area. (See bursar's office website for details.)

8. What do I do to get started into Kent State University's Secondary MAT program?

First step: Visit the Content Required page. This lists the specific licenses that we offer through our MAT program. You must have all but 1 or 2 of these content requirements for the chosen licensure completed prior to beginning our program.

Second step: Get a Content/Transcript Evaluation done. The form can be downloaded from Vacca Office of Student Services website. Return the completed form to room 304 White Hall, either in person or via mail. The form will be sent to the appropriate counselor who will review the application and transcripts. You will receive your evaluation through the mail within 2-4 weeks, with the MAT faculty contact listed in the cover letter that accompanies your returned evaluation.

Note: If you are saving one of the content area courses for the fall of the MAT program, check with the faculty advisor to make sure that the course is offered in the Fall and is at a 30,000 level.
