What year (years) did you graduate and which program(s) did you complete?
I graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s of science in education focused on Health and Physical Education.  I also earned my master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and Penn State University, respectively.

What were some of your biggest challenges after graduating that shaped your career?
I recognized that failure and rejection are oftentimes the forerunners of success.  I had to overcome my fear of speaking in front of others, and realize that involvement in professional associations can open “doors of opportunity” beyond my wildest dreams. Plus, I recognized that you can’t be great at everything; thus, surround yourself with highly competent people, who are passionate about their work, and who have skills and abilities you don’t have (and also treat them well).  Finally, it’s important to find work or a job that you love doing.

What has been your most significant professional accomplishment since graduating?
My most significant accomplishment was serving as president of the American College of Sports Medicine from 1999-2000.

Are you currently employed, and if so, where?
Currently, I am the director of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
