Kent State Goes to NCSS

Many of us recently presented at the annual meeting of CUFA/NCSS (College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for Social Studies). The picture above is before Andy Hostetler and Todd Hawley presented on the economics of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a presentation at NCSS on Friday, November 13.

At CUFA on Thursday, November 12, we had an entire session devoted to the Self-Study work of our self-study collaborative.

Symposium: I love it when a plan comes together: Collaborative self-study in graduate school as a space to reframe thinking about social studies teaching and teacher education (Session 5-3--GWCC A-307)

Todd S. Hawley, Kent State University
Alicia R. Crowe, Kent State University
Katie Anderson Knapp, Kent State University
Andy L. Hostetler, Louisville High School / Kent State University
Bryan Ashkettle, Solon High School / Kent State University
Michael Levicky, Maplewood High School / Kent State University

This symposium explores the development of, and research findings generated from, a self-study collaborative consisting of four social studies graduate students and two social studies teacher educators. The session is designed to promote conversations on the individual self-studies and to examine the potential for collaborative self-study to improve graduate education.

The content knowledge expert, the character, and the powerful pedagogue: Competing conceptions of the good "social studies teacher" (Session 1-9, GWCC A-313)

Todd S. Hawley, Kent State University
Alicia R. Crowe, Kent State University
Elizabeth Brooks, Kent State University

This paper explores teacher candidates' beliefs concerning the qualities of good social studies teachers. Findings highlight the varied, overlapping, and competing beliefs participants brought into their first methods course. The presentation will explore opportunities for teacher educators to reframe the content, process and structure of their social studies education programs.

Civic actors, civic educators: Change-oriented service in a pre-service teacher education program (Session 2-4-GWCC A-303)

Jennifer James, Kent State University

Presenters will share findings from the first two semesters of a longitudinal qualitative study of the relationship between pre-service teachers' personal experiences of citizenship and their constructs of and commitments to civic education.

Morality and compliance in the preschool classroom: Early lessons in citizenship (Session 3-5-GWCC A-303)

Jennifer James, Kent State University Jamie Sisson, Kent State University

Presenters will share findings from a qualitative case study, which sought to understand how young children struggle to develop autonomous morality within the context of a preschool classroom that emphasizes obedience and control.
