On March 19 Carrie Schweitzer received the
Outstanding Research and Scholar Award
at Kent State University.
Dr. Schweitzer is an internationally recognized expert in decapod crustaceans and a prolific scholar – having already published over 120 technical books and papers. Her research in Paleontology centers around systematics and biogeography. Carrie has worked diligently to develop new ways of using the morphology of the preservable remains of crabs and other decapods to ferret out phylogenetic relationships. Congratulations Carrie!
Position Announcement
Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Biogeochemistry
The Department of Geology at Kent State University seeks to hire a postdoctoral researcher in organic biogeochemistry for a two-year term to begin by May 1, 2013. Click here to download the PDF.
The Department of Geology at Kent State University offers four-year programs leading to the Bachelor of Science, B.S. Environmental Geology Concentration and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Geology as well as the Bachelor of Arts in Earth Science. Students can also pursue graduate study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology. The atmosphere within the department is personalized and informal with major emphasis placed on teaching as well as on research. Most undergraduate major classes are small (10-30 students). Close faculty-student relationships are established by participation in various field trips and several annual student-faculty social events, including the fall picnic and the spring banquet.
Colloquium is held Fridays at 1:15 pm in room 234 McGilvrey Hall. Click here for our current schedule.
The Kent State University Scholarships for Broadening Participation in the Sciences will annually provide 21 undergraduate scholarships, averaging $5,000 each to promising science students.
Applications being accepted beginning in early Spring 2013 for STEM research experiences for undergraduates for the academic year 2013/14. For more scholarship opportunities, search Pathways to Science for opportunities to do research at the undergraduate level, here and abroad. The Institute for Broadening Participation in the STEM sciences offers free online search tools to encourage minority participation in STEM sciences.
