Entering freshmen are eligible for merit scholarships through the Kent State University Honors College. Scholarships are awarded based upon high school grade point average, class rank, and standardized test scores (ACT or SAT). Scholarships range from $1500 to full in-state tuition, room, board, and books. Scholarships recipients can retain their scholarships for four years (eight semesters) as long as they complete the required number of Honors courses each year and maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
Students who wish to be considered for Honors membership and scholarship should submit a Kent State admission application and inform the Honors College of their interest either by phone (330-672-2312) or e-mail ( dcraig@kent.edu). A select number of specialized scholarships require additional information (e.g., audition, portfolio, and writing samples). A complete list of all Honors scholarships as well as the minimum requirements and required information are listed on the Student Financial Aid web site ( www.sfa.kent.edu).
College students are eligible to apply for a limited number of $1000 Honors Academic Achievement Awards ( HAAA Application). These scholarships are available to Honors students who do not currently hold an Honors scholarship of $1000 or more, Kent State University students who decide to join the Honors College, and transfer students from community colleges, four-year institutions, and Kent’s regional campuses.
Criteria for Scholarship Renewal. Honors scholarships are awarded for one academic year. All recipients of renewable scholarships will be evaluated at the end of each spring semester. Continuation of renewable scholarships will depend upon whether recipients meet the required cumulative 3.25 g.p.a., satisfy Honors experience expectations, and make satisfactory progress toward graduation. Those who fail to meet the g.p.a. requirement but have at least a 3.15 cumulative g.p.a. will have their scholarships continued for the fall semester of the following academic year only. Continuation for spring semester will require a cumulative g.p.a. of at least 3.25 by the end of the fall semester. Students whose cumulative g.p.a. falls below a 3.15 will have their scholarships withdrawn.
Reinstatement and Tenure. Students may request reinstatement of their scholarships when they meet the requirements for renewal, contingent upon the availability of funds. The total number of semesters of the original award will be reduced by the number of semesters the scholarship was withdrawn. In other words, the eight-semester clock keeps ticking even during the semesters without scholarship.
Honors Scholar in Residence (HSIR). Students holding scholarships for residence hall fees (HSIR awards) are eligible for these funds as long as they live in the residence halls and meet academic requirements for scholarship renewal. Students who move off campus automatically lose the HSIR portion of their scholarship.
Insufficient Honors Work. A student’s scholarship probation for Insufficient Honors Work will be for one semester only. During this time the required number of Honors experiences must be brought up to the appropriate level for normal progress.
Appeal. A student whose scholarship is withdrawn may appeal this decision to the Dean of the Honors College.
