LGBTQ community talks about their experiences

LGBTQ community talks about their experiences

Residence Services | 03/22/2012

The Department of Residence Services' Social Justice Team in conjunction with Pride! Kent and Kent Interhall Council's Diversity Committee hosted a panel discussion with students from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community to talk about their experiences of prejudice; and how they have come to accept the terms of their own identity as a member of the LGBT community. Panel members discussed the obstacles of discrimination they faced in their lives and how these experiences have impacted and changed their perspectives with respect to the bedrock principle of equality in our society.

Panelist, through their own testimonies with others, shared their personal coming out stories to students, faculty, staff, and administrators as a way to educate individuals on how to create an environment that is free of homo-bi-trans-phobia and other forms of prejudice.

The Department of Residence Services' Social Justice Team – through the Campus Conversations series and other initiatives – is committed to providing a nurturing environment that supports the total development of our LGBTQ students so they can achieve their educational/extra co-curricular goals in a satisfying way. To that end we will continue to chart a course towards inclusive excellence in fostering and yielding positive outcomes that will celebrate and cultivate the collegiate experiences for our LGBTQ students through diverse programming and personal connections that encourages dialogue and interconnectedness.

We invite you to continue the social justice dialogue. Join us for our remaining Spring 2012 Campus Conversation events: a viewing of the short Upheaval on March 14, and a viewing of the short Fueling the Fire on April 16; all events will be held in 106 Manchester Hall at 7pm.
