Flu Prevention

All adults are encouraged to get a flu shot, especially those in the following categories:

  • Health care workers

  • Anyone who provides home care to persons at high risk and residents of long-term care facilities or dormitories;

  • Anyone 50 years of age and older

  • Individuals with heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, cancer or HIV/AIDS; and

  • Pregnant women.

By taking some very simple precautions, you can significantly reduce your risk of contracting the flu and protect yourself and co-workers.  For ways on how to stay healthy during any flu season, read these tips from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) and from University Health Services!

Know the Symptoms

Symptoms of the flu can include a high fever (102-104 degrees), chest discomfort/cough, body aches, headache and/or exhaustion. Often the symptoms start suddenly and people can pinpoint exactly when their symptoms started (i.e., "I was fine at 10, but by 10:30 I was really sick"). A stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and other symptoms of the common cold are usually not prominent.

Flu Clinics for Faculty and Staff

University Health Services, in collaboration with the University's OneWellU Wellness Program, offer a  series of flu clinics at several campuses each year.  These clinics are open to faculty and staff (and their adult dependents age 6 and over).

For employees and their adult dependents covered by one of Kent State's medical providers, Anthem or Medical Mutual, the cost of the flu shot is covered in full.  You must bring your insurance ID card with you.  For all others, the cost is $20, payable by cash or check.  Make sure to bring the appropriate forms (Flu Shot and Consent Form) with you to your scheduled appointment.

  • Check back soon for a yearly schedule.
