Guidelines for Classified Employee Holiday Pay:

In order to be eligible for holiday pay, an employee must be in active pay status for the entire scheduled work day immediately preceding the holiday to receive holiday compensation.

  • If a holiday occurs during a period of paid sick or vacation leave, the employee will draw normal holiday pay and will not be charged for sick leave or vacation.
  • If an employee is scheduled to work on holiday and calls off, they are only eligible to receive pay for the holiday.
  • If a full-time employee is scheduled to work Sunday thru Thursday, and a holiday falls on a Friday, the employee will still receive holiday pay for Friday. This may create overtime, and a supervisor may request the employee take another day off so they will not exceed 40 hours for the week.
  • If a full-time employee is scheduled to work Sunday thru Wednesday, works 10 hours a day and holidays fall on Thursday and Friday, they are eligible to receive holiday pay for eight (8) hours on Thursday and eight (8) hours on Friday.  This may create overtime, and a supervisor may request the employee take another day off so they will not exceed 40 hours for the week.
  • If a full-time employee is scheduled to work Sunday thru Wednesday, works 10 hours a day, and the holiday falls on a Monday, they are eligible to receive 10 hours of holiday pay.
  • If a full-time employee is scheduled to work on a day that is a holiday, and actually works on that day, they are eligible to receive eight (8) hours of holiday pay plus time and one-half pay for actual hours worked.
  • Part-time employees scheduled to work on Sunday thru Thursday are only eligible to receive holiday pay if the holiday falls on a scheduled work day.
  • If a part-time employee is scheduled to work on a day that is a holiday, and they actually work that day, they receive their normal hours as holiday pay, plus time and one-half pay for the hours actually worked.
  • If a part-time employee is not scheduled to work on a day that is a holiday, and they actually work that day, they get paid for the number of hours worked that day as holiday pay plus the number of hours they worked that day at time and one-half pay for the hours actually worked.

AFSCME employees should refer to Article 33 of the AFSCME Bargaining Agreement for additional information.
