According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median salary for mathematicians is $68,680 and the middle 50% ranges between $50,740 and $93,190. Mathematicians working for the government average $76,400 while statisticians average $76,530. Applied mathematicians tend to make more money than pure mathematicians. The Occupational Outlook Handbook also describes many careers which rely heavily on mathematics. For example, 70 percent of all actuaries work for insurance companies. Their median salary is $66,590 and the middle 50 percent ranges between $47,260 and $91,190.
