According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median salary for mathematicians is $68,680 and the middle 50% ranges between $50,740 and $93,190. Mathematicians working for the government average $76,400 while statisticians average $76,530. Applied mathematicians tend to make more money than pure mathematicians. Their median salary is $66,590 and the middle 50 percent ranges between $47,260 and $91,190.
