The Bachelor of Science in Spanish translation is a preprofessional degree designed for students to develop the skills needed to become working translators. It also introduces the rudiments of translation theory as it applies to the actual practice of translation. Graduates of the program may enter graduate programs in translation (the professional degree), or go on to work for government, business or industry, for translation agencies or as freelance translators. While meeting requirements designed to ensure competence in Spanish, translation majors take core courses in translation during the junior and senior years. The subject area specialty requirement enables translation students to acquire a level of expertise in a specific field in which they can specialize as translators. Translation majors are strongly encouraged to undertake study in a country where Spanish is spoken.
Students interested in declaring the B.S. in Spanish Translation should contact the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies, where advising is mandatory.
