Celebrate Kent State Honors Week, March 30-April 5 (3/17/08)

The 27th Annual Honors Week will take place March 30 through April 5 on the Kent State University campus this year.

“The primary purpose of Honors Week is to raise up and celebrate the research and creative achievements of our undergraduate students,” says Dr. Donald R. Williams, interim dean for the Honors College. “At the same time, we provide learning opportunities for the entire university and community  through speakers, presentations and performances.”

This year, highlights will include a lecture on immigration and Latin America, a Department of Chemistry achievement celebration, a forum for undergraduate scholars and artists, various award ceremonies, and an art education exhibit.

As part of the Guest of Honor University Artist and Lecture Series, Dr. Marcelo Suárez-Orozco will speak about immigration and Latin America on April 1 at 7 p.m. in 310 Kent Student Center. Co-founder of the Harvard Immigration Projects, Suárez-Orozco is a leading expert on issues of human migration and immigration and was co-director of a comprehensive study of Asian, Afro-Caribbean and Latino immigrant youth in American society — the largest study in the history of the National Science Foundation’s Cultural Anthropology division. Currently, he serves as the Courtney Sale Ross University Professor of Globalization and Education at New York University.

The Forum for Undergraduate Students and Scholars will take place on Tuesday, April 1, from 3-5 p.m. in 204 Kent Student Center. The forum provides student academic achievers with the opportunity to present their scholarly and creative contributions through poster and forum presentations. Sponsored by the Honors College, the event kicks off with presentations by undergraduate students on their current research topics; then poster displays and a reception will follow.

“Students, faculty and the community benefit from seeing the high quality work in which Kent State students are engaged,” Williams says. “It is really important to participate in order to show support for these students who work so hard and produce such great work.”

In addition, the Department of Chemistry will host its Sixth Annual Honors Week Celebration of Student Achievement on April 2 in the Kiva. Sir Fraser Stoddard, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University, will discuss "Chemistry and Molecular Nanotechnology in Tomorrow's World" at 3 p.m., followed by a recognition awards and scholarship ceremony with a student research poster session at 4:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Ballroom Balcony.

Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For more information, call 330-672-2312 or send an e-mail to kbrown13@kent.edu.
