Program Overview

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner concentration prepares students to provide advanced acute and chronic comprehensive care across the adult lifespan.  If you are interested in pursuing your Master’s Degree in Nursing in acute care settings, KSU can help you achieve your goals.

The demand for Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners has kept pace with the rapid growth in complexity in the acute healthcare environment.  These advanced practice nurses are prepared to provide advanced nursing and or specialized medical care to adults across the lifespan with complex, acute and chronic illnesses in a variety of healthcare settings.  Such settings may include, specialty clinics, emergency departments, and acute, sub-acute, and intensive/critical care areas.

The Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner clinical education can encompass any setting in which patient care requirements include complex monitoring and therapies, high-intensity interventions within the range of moderate to high-acuity care.  

While most AGACNPs practice in acute care and hospital based settings, the continuum of acute care services spans the geographic settings of home, ambulatory care, urgent care, and rehabilitative care.  In addition to managing patient care, the AGACNP utilizes invasive interventions and procedures to promote physiologic stability.  

The Master’s Degree in Nursing prepares students to perform a wide variety of procedures, and the skill sets required by each positions re often dependent on the specific patient population goals, including patient stabilization, minimization of complications, and promotion of physical and psychological well-being.

The AGACNP Nursing Master’s degree Curriculum is a 42 credit hour program including both didactic and clinical courses that:

• Emphasizes the Advance Practice Model with critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning, and problem solving
• Includes evidence based practice research application and utilization
• Provides a minimum of 630 clinical hours of supervised clinical practice
• Program is based on a 3 year time commitment
• Many Core classes offered with an online format
  
  

The ideal applicant to this Nursing Master’s Degree program will have 3-5 years of nursing experience with 2 years of intensive care experience. Applicants must arrange for an interview prior to being approved for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. Applicants should have a good working knowledge of the Nurse Practitioner role and preferably shadowed nurse practitioners in the nurse practitioner concentration of interest. References from persons able to attest to your nursing skills and ability to represent the NP role are expected.

This program is looking for applicants who are accomplished in their field of nursing and have proven skills in leadership, mentoring and a commitment to the growth of their profession.  Candidates with completed applications meeting these requirements will be interviewed for potential admittance into the AGACNP program.
