Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

The Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration prepares students to expand their role to include the use of evidence-based practice, health policy, leadership, education, case management, and consultation. You will take clinical courses that cover advanced psychotherapy with individuals, families, and groups across the life span, consultation/liaison nursing in organizations and communities, and primary care concepts related to psychiatric mental health advanced nursing practice.

The role of the PMHNP includes comprehensive psychiatric mental health assessment and diagnosis, medication management, and the use of advanced psychotherapeutic modalities, such as individual, family, and group psychotherapy. You may work in Community Mental Health Centers, Patient Centered Medical Homes, Private Practice, or Primary Care Settings.

As a PMHNP student, we offer you:

  • Fall and spring semester start dates
  • Networking and mentoring opportunities for graduates during and after the program

The PMHNP concentration at the master's level is a minimum of 49 credit hours, and can be completed in as little as two (2) years, or if part time, in four (4) years.

Certification

All successful graduates of the PMHNP concentration possess educational requirements to apply for The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) exam for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
