Service-Learning

A teaching and learning strategy using course objectives to integrate community service, course instruction, and reflection to enrich the learning experience, promote civic purpose, and strengthen communities.

Example: A learning objective for students enrolled in a Non-Profit Management course is to gain an understanding of the process of starting and managing a non-profit organization. To facilitate this understanding, students select from a group of newly 501c3 organizations of their interest. They contact the agency's director and offer to provide 20 hours serving on the board and assisting in building the agency's infrastructure.

Project-Based Service-Learning

A teaching and learning strategy  using course objectives to develop service projects that can be accomplished in or outside of the classroom setting and essentially provides the “back end” work to help forward the goals of an organization.

Example: A learning objective for students enrolled in an advanced Non-profit Management course is to gain knowledge and skills in securing funding for non-profit organizations. Students contact the directors of newly-formed 501c3 organizations and provide 20 hours serving on the board. Students assist in clarifying agency needs and submit a SWOT report that includes of list of potential funding agencies.
