Student "Excellence in Action"

Aeronautics

Earning awards . . .

Students in Kent State’s aeronautics program, the first and only accredited aviation program in Ohio, earned first place in the 2009 Region III Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference sponsored by the National Intercollegiate Flying Association. The competition tests skills in maneuvering, navigating and flight planning.

A Kent State art major was one of 10 students nationwide to receive a 2009 Wingate Fellowship, which is awarded to individuals deemed to have great artistic potential. The student used his award to visit Ireland and create art objects based on memories linked to his grandmother’s diary.

A senior finance major was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award by Financial Executives International. The national award is given to students who are in the top 5 percent of their classes and display strong leadership.

Three computer science majors received 2009 Google Summer of Code awards. The Summer of Code is a highly competitive program, with only 15 percent of proposals funded. Students work with mentors from industry and academia to enhance and maintain vital, open-source software systems.
Vet Tech

. . . and giving 100 percent

Last year, the associate degree program in veterinary technology at the Tuscarawas Campus was one of 154 programs in the U.S. and Canada to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. All members (100 percent) of the first Kent State class who took a mandatory national exam in January 2009 passed, allowing them to apply for state licensure in veterinary technology. The national passage rate by institution is 59 percent.

Graduates of Kent State Trumbull’s Ohio Basic Peace Officer and Corrections Officer Training programs boast a 100-percent pass rate on the state’s Peace Officer Certification Examination.
