Day 1 - Introduction to Meta-Analysis

• What are the goals of a meta-analysis?
• How a meta-analysis differs from a narrative review?
• Computing effect sizes and treatment effects?
• Computing a combined effect
• Fixed-effect vs. random-effects analyses
• Criticisms of meta-analysis

Day 2 - How to conduct a Meta-Analysis

• Using analysis of variance to compare subgroups of studies
• Using meta-regression to assess the impact of moderators
• Working with complex data sets
• Assessing the possible impact of publication bias
• When does it make sense to perform a meta-analysis?

About the instructor

Dr. Borenstein from Biostat (www.biostat.com) is the co-author (with Larry Hedges, Julian Higgins, and Hannah Rothstein) of Introduction to Meta-Analysis (Wiley, 2009), Computing effect sizes for meta-analysis (Wiley, 2011), and Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (Biostat, 2005). He lectures widely on meta-analysis, and has presented workshops on meta-analysis at the NIH, CDC, and the FDA. He has also served as Director of Biostatistics at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and as Associate Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

HAZWOPER Training

May 13 - 17, 2013 | 8am – 5pm

What: The Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40 hour training course meets the requirements of the OSHA Standard CFR 1910.120 for working on hazardous waste sites.

Why: This course will meet the 40 hour in class requirement only needed to be certified under the OSHA Standard (also requires 3 days supervised work on site, not provided in this course). It may also be of interest to those who would like to learn more about hazardous materials response and clean-up. This course has also been awarded 30 hours of registered sanitarian credit (10 more hours have been applied for).

Who: Public sector responders, employers and contractors involved in emerging planning and hazardous material clean-up

Biosafety and Biocontainment Training for BSL-3 Laboratory Workers

The National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program and Kent State University are offering a 5 day series of courses in Biosafety and Biocontainment for BSL-3 Laboratory Workers. These courses are designed for biosafety professionals, researchers and laboratorians to enhance individual knowledge and meet the scientific, regulatory, biocontainment, biosafety, and engineering challenges associated with the working in a biocontainment facility. Daily topics will include:

1. Introduction to microbiology and biosafety
2. Principles of biosafety and biocontainment
3. The biological risk assessment process
4. Laboratory sterilization and disinfection
5. Emergency planning and response
6. Laboratory regulations, standards and guidelines
7. Biocontainment laboratory security
8. Packaging and shipping 6.2 hazardous materials
9. Agents of bioterrorism
10. Hands on sessions using laboratory equipment

NBBTP is authorized by IACET to offer 4.0 CEUs. Participants will be required to score a minimum of 70% on each post-course knowledge assessment in order to receive CEUs. Successful completion of the courses is a prerequisite for completion of a Basic Level Certificate in Biosafety and Biocontainment, and for participation in the NBBTP Advanced and Comprehensive Level certificate programs.

Course Tuition is $1200, or $240/day.

We request registration by June 1, 2013, after which participants will be admitted if space is available.

2. Lodging at several national chain hotels is available in or near Kent. The Kent State University rate of $74.95/night is available at the Kent Holiday Inn Express Inn & Suites (330-673-9200)- which is four miles from campus but close to restaurants and downtown Kent. The hotel rate includes a complimentary breakfast buffet. Shuttle service between campus and the hotel may be available for a fee. 3.     Information on payment for lodging will be emailed to registrants. Transportation, lodging, all meals and incidental expenses are the responsibility of individual participants. Registrants will receive a confirmation including directions and information on transportation to and from campus.

The mission and vision of the National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program is to prepare biosafety and biocontainment professionals of the highest caliber to meet the needs of the biomedical, emerging disease and civilian biodefense research communities through the 21st century.
