Featured Researcher -- Prof. Torsten Hegmann, Ph.D., Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program & Liquid Crystal Institute

Torsten Hegmann, Ph.D., an Ohio Research Scholar, joined the faculty of the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program (CPIP) and Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI) as an Associate Professor in 2011.  He is also an adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Chemistry as well as Pharmacology and Therapeutics.  His research is focused on the science and technology of advanced nanomaterials.  Specifically, his group’s focus is on the fabrication of liquid crystal – nanoparticle composites using functionalized nanoparticles and thermotropic amphiphilic and non-amphiphilic liquid crystals that will respond to external stimuli such as temperature and applied electric fields.

In December 2012, Dr. Hegmann and his colleagues were named recipients of the inaugural Internal Post-doctoral Seed Program which resulted in awards for the support of two post-doctoral associates for two years. He and his wife Dr. Elda Hegmann, assistant professor (CPIP, LCI), also recently received a College of Arts and Sciences Spring 2012 Research Incentive Award for their proposal:  Biodegradable Side Chain Liquid Crystal Elastomers: Smart Responsive Scaffolds for Stem Cell Differentiation.

Recently, Hegmann is leading efforts to establish a regenerative medicine initiative known as ReMedIKS.
