How can I apply?

If you meet the criteria below, you may download an application from this site or pick up a copy from the Academic Success Center (ASC) in Michael Schwartz 207.

All forms must be returned to the ASC with the following attachments:

• A letter of recommendation from an instructor (preferred) or previous employer
• A detailed copy of your class schedule for the upcoming semester, if available.

Applications to be an SI leader for the Fall 2012 semester are due by Friday, March 30th (extended).

As usual, we will be accepting applications for all SI courses.

The more flexibility you have and the more courses you can SI for, the greater chance you have of being placed as an SI leader.

What criteria does one have to meet to be chosen as a SI leader?

In order to be chosen as a SI leader for a course, a student must meet all of the following criteria:

• Undergraduate or graduate student taking at least six credit hours
• Cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above
• Sophomore or higher class standing
  
• Taken the SI class before, preferably from the same instructor
• Received a final course grade of an A or A- in the SI class
• Have appropriate times open to conduct the SI sessions
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Mastery of the course content
• Sensitive to the needs of others
• Strong writing and speaking proficiency
• Evidence of excellence in responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.

Do SI leaders receive training?

Yes, SI leaders receive ongoing training that covers instructional strategies geared toward strengthening student academic performance.  New SI Leaders are required to attend SI training during the week before classes start.  Early move-in is available and details of the training will be given during your interview.

What does a SI leader do?

A SI leader for a given course attends all class sessions, takes notes, reads all assigned materials, and conducts three or more SI sessions each week.  During these sessions, the SI leader integrates how-to-learn with what-to-learn in a fun, interactive, lecture-free atmosphere.

Do SI leaders get paid?

Yes, SI leaders are paid for their time.  This includes time spent training, attending SI class lectures, preparing for SI sessions, and facilitating SI sessions.  Starting pay is $8.50 per hour. 

Is it enjoyable being an SI leader?

Yes.  While SI leaders are required to be extremely knowledgeable, reliable, and responsible, we also enjoy helping students and getting to know other SI leaders.

How many hours would I have to work as a SI leader?

New SI leaders normally have a twelve-hour weekly commitment.  This commitment includes time for class attendance, SI session preparation, weekly mentor meetings, and a bi-weekly SI leader meeting.
