The art of the picturebook is timeless. Just ask anyone, and chances are they will remember that special book from their childhood — a book that ultimately taught them about life and the world around them. Thanks to the efforts of the late Kenneth L. Marantz, Professor of Art Education at The Ohio State University, and his wife, Sylvia, a former school librarian, many more generations of children will share in that priceless experience.

SLIS Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., was one of three faculty members honored by Kent State University for Outstanding Research and Scholarship in 2014. Competition for this honor is strong; Zeng is the first SLIS faculty member to receive the honor, as well as the first in the College of Communication and Information.

Joanne Kilgour Dowdy woke up the morning of Dec. 26, 2012, to a voice with a purpose. Loud and clear the voice spoke, guiding her in writing her first children’s book, Olympic Hero: Lennox Kilgour’s Story, which tells the story of her father’s journey to becoming a 1952 Olympic bronze medal winner in weightlifting for Trinidad and Tobago.

School of Library and Information Science alumna Bridgette Billingslea of Cleveland Hts., Ohio, was recently promoted to Patient Access Supervisor at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, where she began as a front desk medical receptionist. She now supervises staff members of four outpatient ambulatory medical centers throughout Northeast Ohio, with a fifth clinic in the works.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to intern at the Preservation Reformatting Division at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., taught Rachel McPherson a lot about digital technologies that she might not have learned elsewhere.

McPherson served as a digital technology intern for about two months, from August through September 2014, while pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree in Kent State's School of Library and Information Science.
