University Communications and Marketing offers a customized media training workshop for administrators, faculty and staff to learn how to interact effectively with the news media and present the university positively. The program is designed to provide participants with techniques, information and media-handling skills to respond to journalists' inquiries.
A program will typically include some or all of the following elements:
Media introduction – Participant receive a common foundation on the differences between electronic and print media, how news organizations operate, how stories are constructed, the media's interest in the university and its role in our success.
Interview preparation – Participants learn how to create key messages and crisp sound bites, conduct homework before the interview, handle difficult questions and approach different media interviews.
Video simulations – Participants are videotaped in a mock interview setting that will include easy, difficult and open-ended questions and be appropriate for the their expertise or level of responsibility, with time allowed for constructive and specific feedback.
