Lehman College

Origin

In 2012, the Intel Foundation provided Lehman College with a planning grant to pilot a science fair with five Bronx high schools. The program initiated robust science opportunities among Bronx students. The science fair is an important factor in Lehman's commitment to establishing a pipeline for Bronx students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Lehman College has recently opened a new Science Hall, a $70M investment in collaborative research labs and classrooms as part of the CUNY Decade of the Sciences.

Accomplishments

In 2013, The Bronx SciFest had twenty-one projects and thirty-six participating students. The top prize went to a Lehman High School student, Keyko Sanchez, who won a four-year scholarship to Lehman College. Fifteen students qualified to compete at the New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF), held in May 2013. Five Bronx student projects made it to the finals at NYCSEF, with one coming in third place.

Goals

For 2014, the Lehman College School of Natural and Social Sciences, the Department of Biological Sciences, and the College Now Program are collaborating to increase the number of high schools and students that will participate in Bronx SciFest 2014. Right now, fifteen Bronx high schools have chosen to partner with Lehman College for the Bronx SciFest initiative. We are grateful once again to the Intel Foundation for their support in helping to make Bronx SciFest 2014 a reality.
